Dr. Curtis Cummings has served a 20-year career in the U.S. Public Health Service Corps and the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. He brings invaluable experience and global perspective to his role of Associate Professor in Drexel’s Department for Environmental and Occupational Health.
Following a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and M.D. at Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Cummings was commissioned in the U.S. Public Health Service Corps. Serving on active duty for a three year residency in internal medicine, he followed it with six years’ reserve duty. During that time, Dr. Cummings completed his residency in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY. Subsequently he was Senior Public Health Physician and Chief, Environmental and Occupational Health Clinic, New Jersey State Department of Health. Dr. Cummings then transferred to the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, as an occupational health physician and earned his M.P.H. at Uniformed Service University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Cummings’ assignments include duty as Head of the Applied and Field Science Division, Naval Medical Research Unit Cairo, Egypt, then as Head of the Occupational and Preventive Medicine Department, Philadelphia, of the National Naval Medical Center, for six years. Most recently, Dr. Cummings was Head of the Safety and Health Department, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute. He retired from the U.S. Navy Medical Corps with the rank of Captain. He is board certified in internal medicine and preventive medicine and licensed to practice medicine in New York, New Jersey and Washington State.
Research Interests: Public health readiness; childhood lead poisoning prevention; medical readiness and counter-terrorism; toxicology of heavy metals; medical effects of ionizing radiation.
