Lisa Bowleg’s research and publications focus on: (1) multiple minority stress, resilience, and coming out issues among Black/African-American, lesbian, gay bisexual and transgendered people (LGBT); (2) the influence of social structural factors (e.g., racism, poverty, incarceration) and gender role and sexuality factors on sexual risk in Black/African-American communities. Her academic accomplishments include a Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology and a M.A. in Public Policy, with a concentration in Women’s Studies from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

She is the Principal Investigator (PI) of a National Institutes of Health (NICHD) R01 focused on heterosexually active Black men’s sexual risk behaviors in Philadelphia and a co-PI of a Lesbian Health Foundation-funded grant focused on the safer sex needs of non-heterosexually identified women with HIV/AIDS. Her many honors and awards include: the 2008 Red Ribbon Award for Research from the Community Advisory Board of the Center for AIDS Research at the University of Pennsylvania; a 2007 National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities grant; and Honorable Mention for the 2007 Carolyn Payton Early Career Award from the Society for the Psychology of Women, American Psychological Association (APA). She is a member of the American Public Health Association, the APA, and former Chair of the APA’s Committee on Psychology and AIDS.

Research Interests: HIV prevention research in African-American communities; gender and health; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and health; qualitative research methods.
