Hernando Perez is an assistant professor of public health. He received his M.P.H in Environmental and Occupational Health from Emory University and his Ph.D. in Industrial Hygiene from Purdue University. Dr. Perez is certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and serves as director of the Drexel School of Public Health’s industrial hygiene consulting service. His research interests include children’s environmental health, housing and health, and environmental and occupational exposure assessment, with a particular focus on bioaerosols. He has presented his research at various regional, national and international scientific meetings including the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition and the 10th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate in Beijing, China.
In collaboration with the Philadelphia Housing Authority, Dr. Perez has developed a training program for workers involved in a community based participatory asthma intervention project in housing choice voucher properties (Section 8 Housing) in Philadelphia. Dr. Perez will also be conducting the evaluation of this project, designed to address the increasing prevalence of childhood asthma in low income inner-city communities. Dr. Perez is also the principal investigator of a research project designed to examine the combined role that environmental exposures and dietary deficiencies play in pediatric asthma. This research is a collaborative effort between the Drexel School of Public Health and the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Drexel College of Engineering.
Dr. Perez served as consultant, facilitator, and report writer to the Mold Task Force of the Pennsylvania Department of Health. He is also currently serving as evaluation advisor to the Philadelphia Department of Health’s recently awarded Healthy Homes Demonstration Project. Additionally, he has served as a grant reviewer for internal proposals at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as well as a senior grant reviewer for Round 12 of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Lead Hazard Control Grant Program.
Research Interests: Indoor Air Quality (Mold); children’s environmental health (Asthma); urban pesticide exposure; bioaerosol assessment; occupational/environmental exposure assessment.
