Philadelphia Business Journal Recognizes Dean Gold: "Women of Distinction"

Philadelphia Business Journal -- Women of Distinction 2007

The Philadelphia Business Journal and the National Association of Women Business Owners have honored the Drexel University School of Public Health by naming Dean Marla J. Gold, MD, as one of this year’s Women of Distinction.

Dean Gold was recognized for her commitment to professional excellence and community involvement. The Drexel School of Public Health was the only academic institution to be selected among this year’s recipients. The school was profiled in the November 30 edition of the Business Journal, and Dean Gold received her award at a celebratory reception and dinner on Monday, December 3, at the Sheraton City Center.

"Marla Gold has been the driving force to the School of Public Health’s significant growth. Under her leadership, the school has quadrupled its student body, tripled its faculty and research grants have increased by more than 300 percent. In addition, the School of Public Health recently achieved full, seven-years accreditation. She truly is a woman of distinction," said Drexel University President Dr. Constantine Papadakis.

Students at the School of Public Health accrued more than 43,000 hours of work in the community this past year, working with partnering organizations, agencies and nonprofit groups. This community engagement allows students to apply their knowledge of public health principles directly in the community.

"Marla Gold embraces the School of Public Health’s longstanding commitment to issues of health equity, and understanding the relationship between public health and human rights. She is a passionate leader who motivates and inspires the Drexel community to contribute countless hours to the public good while earning a degree. Dean Gold ensures that students at Drexel don’t just learn public health…they live it," said President Papadakis.

The Drexel University School of Public Health is the only public health school in the Philadelphia metropolitan region, and one of only two schools of its kind in Pennsylvania. The school is committed to identifying societal conditions required for health and to advance the well-being of vulnerable populations. The school’s innovative academic programs integrate classroom learning with real-world experience in one of the most diverse and culturally rich urban areas of the country.
