Students Win "What is Public Health" Grants

Two groups of students from the Drexel University School of Public Health were each recently awarded grants of $1,500 from the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), to enable "What is Public Health" outreach programs.

The Drexel student groups were two out of the 19 which were awarded grants at schools of public health nationwide. The outreach programs, which will be carried out leading up to and during National Public Health Week (April 7 – 14, 2008), are designed to better educate the Philadelphia community about public health issues that impact the region daily. Various posters, forums, community events, Web pages and sticker distribution campaigns will be incorporated into the programs.

The winning programs from Drexel SPH are:

Program: Philadelphia: Our City. Our Love. Our Public Health
Students:
Public Health Theory of Health Communications Class (Dept. of Community Health & Prevention)
Advisors: Allison Karpyn, PhD; Lisa Bowleg, PhD

Program: Climate Change: Our Health in Balance
Students:
Amber Trout '09; Soniya Barde '09; Leigh Pitts '09
Advisor: Marcus Kolb, PhD

We congratulate all of our students for their efforts.

The students will send photos of their efforts to the ASPH, which will post the work of all the students nationwide in promoting public health. For more information, please visit www.whatispublichealth.org or www.asph.org.
