Nancy Epstein has worked in the field of public health for 27 years. Originally trained as a community health educator, she has held positions in policy and legislation, advocacy, community organizing, non-profit management, public health education, and program development. Her work has covered adiverse range of topics, including hunger, nutrition, Food Stamps, health care for underserved communities, health insurance, patient's rights, physical and mental disabilities, oral health, and sustainable agriculture.
Ms. Epstein spent 16 years in Austin, Texas where she was involved primarily in developing legislation. She served as a staff director in the Texas Senate and subsequently as a public interest lobbyist. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, Ms. Epstein's work was focused in Washington, where she worked extensively with state-elected officials and legislators, and served as a consultant to national foundations and community health programs across the country.
She received her Master of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in human development from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1977. Ms. Epstein is currently a full-time seminary student in addition to holding a faculty position with the School of Public Health. She is the author of Aching Teeth and Vanishing Dreams: The Dental Problem's of Philadelphia's At-Risk Children and Youth: A Needs Assessment and Blueprint for Action, published in March 2003.
