Dean Marla Gold is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. Her position prior to the deanship was Division Chief for HIV/AIDS Medicine at the former MCP Hahnemann University. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University and a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry - New Jersey Medical School, Dr. Gold consults on medical and public health issues for a range of institutions. Much of her work focuses on the design and implementation of health and support services delivery systems to vulnerable populations. She previously served as Philadelphia's Assistant Health Commissioner for Infectious Disease Control in the Public Health Department, where she was responsible for all reportable and communicable diseases and conditions. She represented the City of Philadelphia as the grantee for Ryan White CARE Act awards, CDC Cooperative Agreements, and directed the design of a system of HIV care among Philadelphia's eight public health centers. Dr. Gold has extensive experience working with community-based organizations, community leaders and coalitions on a wide range of issues. Dr. Gold co-authored "Future Directions," a document that has guided the federally funded Special Projects of National Significance Program in its funding priorities for several years. She maintains key contacts at federal, state and local levels.
In her role as Division Chief, HIV/AIDS Medicine, she was responsible for multiple Patient Care grants and clinical trials, and oversaw a nationally renowned HIV primary care program known as the Partnership Comprehensive Care Practice. She is Co-Principal Investigator of the Pennsylvania AIDS Education and Training Center, and has lectured extensively to diverse audiences. Dr. Gold served on the Health Choices Adult HIV Care Guidelines Committee responsible for creating unified care guidelines for persons with HIV/AIDS in Medicaid managed care HMOs. Current work also focuses on delivery of patient care in a managed care environment. She is on the faculty of a HRSA-supported project focused on improvement of HIV care health outcomes among clinics caring for underserved populations with HIV/AIDS throughout the United States. She has been caring for people with HIV/AIDS for over 15 years. She is interested in the relationship between public health and human rights and committed to addressing this critical area throughout the curriculum at the School. Recent honors include the US Public Service Assistant Secretary of Health Award for outstanding service to persons with HIV/AIDS, the Sisterhood award from the National Commission of Christians and Jews, and Health Care Provider of the Year in Pennsylvania from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was recently listed as a “top doctor” for women with HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia Magazine.
Research Interests: HIV/AIDS: design of care systems; treatment protocols; resource utilization; epidemiology; CQI; managed care & systems of health care; health administration; behavioral health care: substance abuse treatment systems.
