Dr. Longjian Liu received his Bachelor of Medicine from Shanxi Medical University, China, in December 1982, his Masters of Science in Epidemiology from the University of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom, in November 1993, and Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology/Community Medicine from the University of Hong Kong in December 1998.

Dr. Liu’s former professional positions include 1) Preventive Medicine Physician and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Epidemiology, Shanxi Medical University, China; 2) Lecturer in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Medical Statistics; Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Department of Epidemiology, Chongqing University of Medical Sciences, China; 3) Assistant Professor in the Department of International Preventive Nutritional Medicine, Kyoto University, Japan. As his research interests grew in nutrition, aging, cross-cultural and racial/ethnic variation and health, Dr. Liu elected to move to the United States. Since mid-2001, Dr. Liu has been M.D. post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Geriatrics and Neurobiology, College of Medicine; Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; and M.D. Research Fellow in Geriatrics Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) of Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Little Rock, USA. Throughout his teaching career in China, Japan and the USA, Dr. Liu has taught Epidemiology, Medical Demography, Preventive Medicine and Application of Biostatistics for under- and postgraduate students majoring in medicine, public health, population sciences or environment sciences.

Dr. Liu has extensive research experience in four different countries (China, Japan, UK and the USA) in studies of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer in relation to nutrition, aging, environment and racial/ethnic health disparities. Dr. Liu has participated in several important collaborative studies, including the Hong Kong Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevalence Study; BMI and other Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease (Japan National Cardiovascular Surveys); the World Health Organization Cardiovascular Diseases and Alimentary Comparison (WHO-CARDIAC) Study; Nutrition and Health Outcomes in Old Patients (Central Arkansas Veteran’s Hospital-based Study); Nutritional Status and Physical Activity Patterns of Older Adults (a community-based cross-sectional study in Arkansas).

Dr. Liu’s publishing credits include more than 40 articles in 21 peer-reviewed journals, including: International Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of American Geriatrics Society, Journal of Gerontology, Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of Hypertension, Hypertension Research, CVD Prevention, Stroke, Diabetic Medicine, and Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention. Dr. Liu has also authored chapters in Medical Statistics, Social Medicine and Health Administration and other books. Dr. Liu serves as a reviewer for Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Journal of Human Hypertension, Stroke, and Public Health Nutrition.
 
Research Interests: Nutrition and diet-genetic interaction effects in heart disease and cancer prevention; epidemiological study and design; application of biostatics in epidemiology; international health in cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention; analytical studies of national and international health databases (US-NHANES, US-LSOA, Japan-National CVD Surveys, UK-Health Surveys, China-National Nutrition Surveys); cardiovascular disease and diabetes epidemiology.
