Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders account for 13% of the global burden of disease, surpassing both cardiovascular disease and cancer. Traumatic events are common experiences worldwide; the majority of persons worldwide will experience a traumatic event at some point in their life. In parts of the world where conflict is endemic, the prevalence of traumatic events is extraordinarily high. Traumatic events contribute to the development of mental disorders and, directly and indirectly to physical disorders. This presentation will discuss the contribution of traumatic event experience to global health broadly, with a focus on mental health.
