"Attributable risk of mortality from incident Alzheimer's"

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is listed by the CDC as the 6th leading cause of death in the US, yet there is a gap between the number of persons with AD (5.4 million) and the number of deaths attributed to AD based on death certificates (82,000 in 2008). An accurate estimate of the population attributable risk (PAR) of AD on mortality from prospective cohort studies would aid in a more realistic assessment of burden of mortality due to AD. However, cohort studies with intervals of several years between
diagnostic assessments may underestimate PAR by failing to account for rapidly progressive AD. Dr. James will present work using data from two ongoing cohort studies of aging with annual assessments at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, the Memory and Aging Project and the Religious Orders Study, to study risk of mortality from incident AD.

Bryan D. James, PhD
Bryan James, PhD, is an epidemiologist with the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center and an assistant professor in the Rush Department of Internal Medicine. His research focuses on identifying risk factors for Alzheimer's disease,dementia, cognitive decline and disability at the population level.
