Steven Becker, PhD
Dr. Steven M. Becker is a leading expert on the public health, community response, and risk communication issues associated with emerging health threats. He has extensive experience dealing with disasters, contamination incidents, disease outbreaks, terrorism, industrial accidents, and environmental emergencies. Dr. Becker has directed a variety of major research studies aimed at improving preparedness, training, and risk communication for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents. This includes serving as a principal investigator in the Pre‐Event Message Development Project, a groundbreaking multi‐year CDC‐funded study of people's reactions, concerns and information needs related to new and emerging health threats. Dr. Becker also has wide‐ranging “on‐the‐ground” experience at disaster sites around the world, including a major chemical accident in Great Britain, the 1999 nuclear criticality accident in Tokaimura, Japan, and the 2001 foot‐and‐mouth disease outbreak in the UK. In addition, he has done follow‐up work in Ukraine and Belarus on the continuing impacts and implications of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Most recently, Dr. Becker was a member of a special assistance team that was invited to Japan in response to the March 2011 earthquake‐tsunami disaster and the accident at the Fukushima Dai‐ichi nuclear plant.
