"Perceptions of the Welfare System and the People Who Use It"

A Panel Discussion Featuring:
The welfare system is consistently conceived of as being ineffective, inefficient, and generally broken. More often than not, it fails to meet the needs of those individuals and families who use it. Moreover, those individuals are often perceived as being lazy and uneducated, and as "milking" the system. The panelists will explore how perceptions of the welfare system, welfare caseworkers, and the people who use it are affected by and effect policy.

Mariana Chilton, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Public Health at the Drexel University School of Public Health. She is the Director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities (formerly known as the Philadelphia GROW Project/Witnesses to Hunger) and Co-Principal investigator of Children's HealthWatch. She most recently launched Witnesses to Hunger to increase women’s participation in the national dialogue on hunger and poverty.
