Rise in Food Insecurity in the Recession: Children's HealthWatch Report

7/14/2009
A Children's HealthWatch report shows a 22.2% increase in food insecurity among families surveyed; this marks the largest increase in food insecurity rates since Children's HealthWatch has been collecting data.

The demonstrated food insecurity of families surveyed increased from 18.5% in 2007 to 22.6% in 2008. This is the largest increase in the rates of food insecurity seen by Children's HealthWatch since 2001, and is a clear indicator that more families are struggling with hunger due to the recession. This research is compiled from five cities across the country, including the Philadelphia site, run by the Philadelphia GROW Project.
