The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bill on June 28 that would make English the official language of Pennsylvania. This would mean that all state and local government forms will be printed in English only. Forms such as food stamp and medicaid applications will be even more difficult for immigrants to complete, limiting their access to the programs to which thier citizen chidlren have a right. The C-SNAP study has found that access to food stamps and to WIC are essential for the wellbeing all infants and toddlers, especially latino children (many of whom are immigrants).
The bill will be discussed this summer in a public hearing on immigration and brought to the Senate after their session resumes on September 26.
Contact your Pennsylvania Senator and tell them to vote NO on this bill (HB1959). Find your senator here.
