C-SNAP Principal Investigator Highlights the Cost of Hunger in the Philadelphia Inquirer

6/15/2007

June 15, 2007
Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Mariana Chilton, PhD, Principal Investigator of the GROW Project, co-authored an op-ed article in the Philadelphia Inquirer entitled, "Hunger: Not Just a Moral Cost". Dr. Chilton discussed the recent publication of "The Economic Costs of Domestic Hunger", disucssed in an earlier GROW highlight, that documents the financial burden of hunger. The report finds that hunger costs Philadelphians $258 a year per person due to lost productivity and increased healthcare costs. The co-authors urge the next Mayor of Philadelphia to address hunger as it is a critical and expensive issue.

Fellow hunger advocates Yael Lehmann of the Food Trust and Karen Wilson of the Philadelphia Colition Against Hunger contributed to the piece.
