A Triumph for the Hungry: Veto-proof Farm Bill Passes in Senate and House

5/15/2008
A Triumph for the Hungry: Veto-proof Farm Bill Passed by the House

There’s good news for low-income families.  The House finally passed the Farm Bill that will protect and improve the Food Stamp Program—America’s number 1 program that protects against hunger and promotes wellbeing.  In the House, the Farm Bill passed 318 to 106.  In the senate the vote was 81 to 15—more than two-thirds of the Senate and House republicans and democrats agreed that ensuring good nutrition for America’s families is high priority.

Some of the Farm Bill improvements include raising the minimum amount of Food Stamps a family can receive, and “indexing” the food stamp allotment to inflation.  This will be very important in a city like Philadelphia, where, even if a family were receiving the maximum amount of food stamps possible, they still could not afford to purchase a balanced and healthy diet for their children.
