Alumni Receive 2008 ASPH/CDC Fellowships
Jason Dela Cruz '08 and Chris Estes '08, recent School of Public Health alumni, were selected to receive Public Health Fellowships from the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this year. The students were two of 18 recent graduates to receive the prestigious ASPH/CDC fellowships. Recently, Jason reported in to the School of Public Health about his work with the fellowship and here’s what he said:
"I am working in the Division of Violence Prevention, Program Development and Evaluation Branch, in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, based at the CDC in Atlanta. Much of my work surrounds the National Academic Centers for Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention (ACE) program. I will be assisting in the overall evaluation of the program which encompasses 10 sites across the U.S., including the Philadelphia-based ACE at the University of Pennsylvania, which Dr. [John] Rich [from the School of Public Health] is involved with. More can be found about the ACE program here.
"The site is being reworked and I am also involved in that project, as well as in the creation of documents that communicate the mission and successes of the ACE program. The best part so far of the fellowship experience has been the overwhelming breadth of public health opportunities at the campus - there are numerous seminars, work groups, and presentations to attend and it is an arduous task to choose the ones I can find the time for. The fellowship allows me the freedom to pursue these activities while cultivating my own professional interests and career development."
Professors [Mariana] Chilton and [Nancy] Epstein were instrumental in my application to the fellowship and their guidance helped me to choose the right path after graduation."
