$900,000 Grant Forges Unique Partnership with Philadelphia Health Management Corporation
First Class of Students in Program Complete First Year
The School of Public Health received $900,000 this year from the regional Philadelphia Health Care Trust to support masters-level public health education for employees of the Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC) and its affiliates who meet the school’s admissions criteria. The program provides critical continuing education opportunities for the region’s public health officials.
Under the partnership program, employees at the PHMC have the opportunity to apply for the Master of Public Health executive program at the School of Public Health. PHMC also encourages employees and staff members of similar organizations across the region to apply for the executive program. The program helps strengthen the public health workforce – a critical need of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation.
The students from the partnership program recently completed the first year of their studies.
“This is an opportunity for working public health officials from the Philadelphia region to advance their education and service to the community,” said Marcus Kolb, PhD, the associate dean of student affairs at the Drexel University School of Public Health. “This is also another example of the many partnerships that the School of Public Health has forged to help create healthier communities across the region.”
The executive program at the School of Public Health is designed for working professionals who are looking to accelerate or redirect their careers. It is modeled after the school’s highly successful full-time Master of Public Health program, yet offers a convenient class schedule – classes are held one Friday and Saturday each month – for working professionals and makes intensive use of the Internet.
In addition, the executive program at the Drexel University School of Public Health covers the major disciplines of public health. By using case-based and a Problem-Based Learning model, students become self-directed learners and effective peer collaborators, while they are assisted by faculty facilitators.
