Dr. Lisa Bowleg, an associate professor at the Drexel University School of Public Health and an expert in LGBT issues and health in African American communities, is profiled in the "Out in Front" section of the April 2009 edition of Curve Magazine, is the nation’s best-selling lesbian magazine.
In the article, Dr. Bowleg discusses her research findings that many of the issues that are important to LGBT African Americans are different than issues that are important to white, middle-class LGBT activists. |
According to Dr. Bowleg, "until we engage in larger discussions to enhance understanding about black LGBT [people's] lives and experiences, and where we place our political priorities, I suspect that this disconnect between the black LGBT community and the predominantly white LGBT community will persist."
Dr. Bowleg’s research focuses on multiple minority stress, resilience and coming out issues among black, African American LGBT, as well as the influence of social structural, gender role and sexuality factors on sexual risk in black, African American communities. Last year, Dr. Bowleg received a nearly $2 million grant from the NIH for a study to raise awareness of HIV risks and facilitate HIV prevention efforts in African American communities.
She has received numerous awards and recognition for her research, and has many published articles. Dr. Bowleg received a PhD in Applied Social Psychology and a Masters degree in Public Policy from The George Washington University.
