SPH Offers Executive Program at Sacramento Center

The Drexel University School of Public Health announced that it will offer its Master's of Public Health (MPH) Executive Program at the university's new Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento, CA beginning in the fall 2009 term.

The center opened in January 2009 and initially offered five master's programs. Four additional degrees, including the one in public health, will be offered in September 2009. The programs are intended to address the schedule needs of working adults and will be offered at One Capitol Mall in Sacramento.

"We are enthusiastic about this university expansion and link to the west coast," said Dr. Mary Hovinga, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Public Health. "Our Executive Program for busy, working professionals has been highly successful in Philadelphia and the east coast, and it can now help to increase and strengthen the public health workforce in California."

Modeled on the School of Public Health’s highly successful full-time MPH program, the Executive Program is a generalist MPH designed for working professionals, whether in public health or considering a career change to public health. The program is tailored for individuals who are committed to accelerating their careers and acquiring the knowledge and tools to advance into leadership roles in public health.

The Executive Program is a hybrid design that maximizes online learning with one weekend classroom session each month. Like the full-time MPH Program, the Executive Program covers the major disciplines of public health, and is built upon the Problem Based Learning model.

Carl "Tobey" Oxholm III was appointed the inaugural dean and chief executive officer of the Center for Graduate Studies in January 2009. Oxholm led the development of the center in his role as executive vice president of Drexel University. After serving as an attorney for more than two-decades, Oxholm joined Drexel University in 2001 as General Counsel. During his tenure at Drexel University, he has played a key role in several, major university initiatives, including the Drexel’s online learning subsidiary, the acquisition of MCP Hahnemann University, which is now Drexel's College of Medicine and School of Public Health, and the creation of the Earle Mack School of Law. Oxholm will also maintain a senior leadership role in Philadelphia.

"We have the best available technologies, integrated in creative and unique ways that make them easily usable by presenters and accessible to students both on-site and off-site," said Oxholm. "This will allow us to deliver the blend of in-person and on-line education that best serves today's working adults. We are confident that our proven, dynamic approach to learning will more effectively position them for leadership and success."

Drexel University initially offered graduate degrees in business administration, engineering management, higher education, information systems and library and information science at the center in Sacramento. The university will also offer graduate degrees in public health, nursing education and faculty role, nursing leadership in health systems management, science of instruction and human resources development at the Center for Graduate Studies starting in the fall.

Founded in 1891, Drexel is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best national universities in "America’s Best Colleges." The university, the 16th largest private university in the United States, is widely recognized for its focus on co-operative education and technology.

Drexel's Sacramento Center will feature state-of-the-art classrooms including wireless access for student laptops and technology support. Students will be linked to all the resources of Drexel’s main campus, including program resources, financial aid, libraries and career assistance. Onsite staff will meet the needs of students and faculty, providing a high level of support throughout the educational process. Drexel will also offer its students the ability to meet and learn from business, civic and community leaders, as it has done with such success in Philadelphia.
