"For the first time in recent memory, a Philadelphia mayor is taking an active interest in combatting hunger, advocates said yesterday at a panel discussion about hunger as a public-health issue," reported the Philadelphia Inquirer about the panel discussion, held Wednesday, April 8, at Drexel University's Hahnemann Campus.
Participants in the panel included Prof. Mariana Chilton of the School of Public Health; Nan Feyler , Giridhar Mallya and Palak Raval-Nelson ( Drexel MPH '02 ), all of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Bill Clark, Philabundance; Carey Morgan , Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger/SHARE, and Diane Loucks , from the office of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.
Members of the panel belong to the Mayor's recently established Task Force on Hunger. Prof. Chilton's presentation targeted the serious public health problems exhibited by Philadelphia children who experience hunger on a daily basis.
