Key to Opportunity

There is a vast array of public and private information sources, available to support the work of the Drexel School of Public Health faculty and staff. Included here are links to federal and state organizations, private foundations and guides to help with submission.

In addition, the school's affiliation with both the College of Nursing & Health Professions and the College of Medicine allows for many partnerships and shared research endeavors.

The Drexel School of Public Health is located in the heart of Philadelphia, the sixth-largest city in the United States. This allows for extensive outreach for community-based research activities and neighborhood health partnerships.

Drexel Office of Research Funding Opportunity from Hablamos Juntos
May 2008

Hablamos Juntos is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for health care facilities serving multilingual communities, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Pioneer Portfolio. In an ongoing partnership with the Society for Environmental and Graphic Design (SEGD), Hablamos Juntos is launching this initiative aimed at encouraging widespread adoption of Universal Health Care symbols by health facilities serving populations unable to read or with limited English proficiency (LEP). The Pioneer Portfolio supports innovative ideas and projects that may lead to important breakthroughs in the future of health and health care. Please help us get the word out of this unique opportunity by forwarding this email to health facilities that may be interested in symbols based signage. Health facilities ranging from small treatment or health centers, single building health care facilities and facilities part of multi-building campus with advanced preparations for implementing new wayfinding systems are encouraged to apply.

Universally recognized graphic symbols, such as traffic symbols or those used to identify parking spaces for the physically handicapped, can be effective ways of communicating with low literacy and limited English speaking populations. Pictures or images that consistently enable logical associations are what make symbols useful in communicating across languages and cultures. Using a rigorous development and testing process, phase one involved the most comprehensive symbols design effort ever undertaken and produced 28 universal health care symbols.

In this second phase, we are seeking four volunteer health facilities ready to implement new signage or wayfinding systems to innovate using symbol-based signage and to help develop best practices for health environments. The project offers a team of leading national experts in symbols and wayfinding signage to support design and testing of health care facilities signage systems using graphic symbols. Facilities selected will be rewarded with award-winning wayfinding systems using best practice application of symbols as a practical solution in health care signage for multilingual and literacy challenged populations.

The deadline for application is July 1, 2008. For a copy of the RFA seeking innovator health facilities to implement symbol-based signage click here.

2008 PPHA Conference Call for Abstracts

There will be workshops and panels at the conference this year. Interested parties working in public health programs across the commonwealth that integrate one or both of the themes above are asked to please contact Michael A. Drexel Office of Research Sponsors Modeling and Simulation Day
April 2008

The Office of Research is sponsoring a Modeling and Simulation Day, on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in Bossone Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. We would like to have 5 minute talks (2-3 Powerpoint slides) by all researchers who are using computer models or computer simulations in their work. This includes both description of complex processes based on scientific principles (e.g. dispersion of chemical agents in a water system following a bio-terror event), or simulation for training purposes of events in a setting close to real life (e.g. a surgeon using remote controlled instruments in a training exercise.) Our goal is to permit researchers who may be using related as well as complimentary methods to become aware of each others' efforts: thus a brief but comprehensive view is what we are aiming for.

Modeling and Simulation is of much current interest, and has the potential to be well supported. Drexel has a high level of effort in these areas, that can only benefit by greater cohesion and visibility.

Please send your name, and a title for your talk, to research@drexel.edu no later than Friday April 18. Please be sure to put the phrase Simulation Talk in the title of the email.
