Welcome to the Department of Community Health and Prevention (CHP) at the Dana and David Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University.
Founded on the solid commitment to human rights and social justice, the Department of Community Health and Prevention promotes the health of communities and the individuals in them through education, community-engaged research, service and advocacy.
Our human rights foundation, our collaborative spirit, and our commitment to addressing structural inequities and the social determinants of health, makes our department uniquely poised to impact today’s urgent public health challenges.
Our department is a diverse community of scholars and public health practitioners with faculty trained in public health and in disciplines such as sociology, psychology, medicine, history, theology, and ethics. Community-engaged research and service initiatives focus on a wide range of pressing public health areas including global and international health, urban health, Black health, disease disparities, spatial analysis GIS, eHealth/mHealth, substance use and misuse, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, LGBTQ health, spirituality and health, public health ethics, history of public health, social justice, food justice, risk and health communication, and program evaluation.
The department emphasizes research based on the principles of community engagement and participatory action, often applying mixed methods approaches that build upon our broad base of expertise.
Students in CHP are fully engaged with our coursework, community-engaged research, and service. We have long-standing and fruitful partnerships with local, national and global organizations in which students hone their public health practice and research skills.
As a CHP student, be it masters or doctoral, you will graduate with an incredibly marketable skill-set and will follow in the footsteps of many highly successful CHP graduates with careers in public health departments, non-profit agencies, for-profit companies, clinical research entities, and leading health organizations. CHP students graduate with the leadership skills, strategic mindset, and training necessary for rewarding and significant careers in public health.
