I am writing this on Martin Luther King Day. I am not usually one for awareness days. Still, it’s hard not to ponder: If every day were Martin Luther King Day, would we collectively hurtle at warp speed to a better world?

I recently attended the Fifth National Conference on Health Disparities. We have been doing this for such a long time at so many conferences. Yet, there remains a significant gap between blacks and whites for so many health outcomes. Racial injustice is at the root. It both pains me and calls me to action.

December 1 marks World AIDS Day. There are 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide and 1.2 million in the U.S. We have long known how HIV is transmitted and how to prevent it. What is it that each of us can do to ensure an AIDS-free generation?

Last week, 55 arrived last week in my own personal inbox. Whatever your age and circumstance may you be able to spend the approaching holidays with whomever you call your friends and/or family. Get rest and get renewed. Our public health mission: collectively continue working to provide everyone, everywhere, the opportunity to live long and live well.

Wherever I go, I can't help but overhear conversations about Jerry Sandusky. How could this happen? We have a major role to play in creating and sustaining a world where our children can thrive, so unglue yourself from the news and ensure you know what to do.

We may not agree on what exactly is wrong or how it happened but this much is true: there is enough money and food in the world to end poverty and to feed everyone. Figuring it all out is the work of our time.

#apha11: Enjoyed the interaction at the annual public health meetings this year in person and over social media. It was my 10th! It's always wonderful to catch up with colleagues, discuss issues and move the academic public health agenda forward.
