Remembering Professor Lisa Ulmer, ScD, MSW

June 24, 2015

We are saddened to share with you the news that longtime Drexel School of Public Health Professor Lisa A. Ulmer, ScD, MSW, passed away on Sunday, June 21.  She leaves two children, Caitlin (Dusty) Ulmer-Long and Justin Ulmer.

The Drexel University School of Public Health will be holding a celebration of Dr. Ulmer’s life on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 3:30 pm.  Please join us and share news of this with others who may be interested in attending.

Location: School of Public Health, Nesbitt Hall, 3215 Market Street, 1st Floor Lobby.

Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm

We will be gathering in Lisa’s home department, the Department of Community Health and Prevention. Lisa was the soul of this department, and we will come together to share memories of her and honor her life’s work.

Prior to coming to Drexel, in her distinguished career, Lisa rose from Assistant to Full Professor at universities including Southern University in Louisiana, the University of Tennessee, Johns Hopkins University, and the Catholic University.

Here at the Drexel University School of Public Health, Lisa not only served as Founding Chair of the Department of Community Health and Prevention and Founder of the school’s first doctoral program, she also served as interim chair of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and mentored generations of students, faculty, and staff.

While serving the school, Lisa kept up an intense research portfolio with funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Departments of Health, the Louisiana Department of Health, and the National Institutes of Health. Her research has made important contributions in the areas drug prevention, tobacco prevention, and cancer education and prevention, to name a few.

Lisa was the recipient of the first Drexel School of Public Health Dean's Special Recognition Award, which was presented to her two short weeks ago on Friday, June 12, 2015. The text of that award read "For Your Constant Dedication to Students, the Department and the School, Your Unwavering Commitment to Excellence, and The Inspiration You Bring Us All."  No truer words were ever spoken.
