Drexel Welcomes Public Health Professionals to Philadelphia for Annual Conference

Philadelphia and Drexel University play host to the American Public Health Association's 137th annual conference this week. Faculty members from the SPH will have a major presence at the conference, including Dr. Stephen Lankenau, who will discuss the use, abuse and safety of medications.  Other topics include violence, cancer education, emergency preparedness, autism, health reforms and more. (Photo Credit: B. Dr. John Rich Named to Institute of Medicine

Dr. John Rich, a professor and chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy at the Drexel University School of Public Health, was named this week to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Drexel Launches Program for LGBT Health

Book Sheds New Light on Health Reform Debate

Dr. David Barton Smith, a professor of health management and policy, examines the underlying structural problems that have produced disparities in treatment, escalating costs, unsafe and inadaquete care, the demoralization of committed health care professionals and the calls for reform in his new book this month. Dr. Smith has extensive experience as an educator, researcher and consultant in health care policies and has authored additional books on this topic.

NIH Awards $1.1M to SPH's Autism Center of Excellence

The Drexel University School of Public Health received a $1.1M grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI) network. The study was established with a more than $14M Autism Centers of Excellence grant from the NIH, as well as $2.5M from Autism Speaks.

Drexel Leads Health Reform Panel

Amid national debate on health reform, experts in public health, medicine, health policy, health law and insurance discussed what the proposed reforms mean for patients and providers during a panel discussion on Oct. 5 at Drexel University. The even was sponsored by the Drexel University School of Public Health and the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University.

SPH Researcher to Help Guide Phila's Child Welfare Programs

Dr. Sandra Bloom, a professor of health management and policy at the School of Public Health, was invited this month to serve on the Child Welfare Advisory Board for the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services. The appointment is for a one-year term.
